The Archives

The Joseph Conrad Society has held an annual international conference since 1974. Information about the past few conferences is archived below. Programmes of earlier conferences are housed in the Society's archives, which may be accessed upon request to the Honorary Secretary.

The Annual International Conference 2011

The Joseph Conrad Society’s 2011 Annual International Conference, its 37th, was held in London on 7-9 July.

The sessions of 7-8 July were held at the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) at 238-246 King Street in Hammersmith. Those of 9 July were held at the University Women's Club at 2 Audley Square, Mayfair.

The Philip J. Conrad Memorial lecture was delivered by C. T. Watts, who spoke on 'Heart of Darkness'.

The Annual International Conference 2010

The Joseph Conrad Society’s 2010 Annual International Conference, its 36th, was held in conjunction with the Société Conradienne Française on 14-17 September in Versailles (St-Quentin-en-Yvelines) and Paris.

The sessions of 14-16 September were held at the Université de Versailles-St-Quentin. The sessions of 17 September were held at the Bibliothèque Polonaise de Paris on the Ile-de-la-Cité.

Keynote lectures were given by Laurence Davies, Zdzislaw Najder, and Claude Maisonnat, and three sessions on Under Western Eyes were held in anticipation of the centenary of the novel's publication.

The Annual International Conference 2009

The Joseph Conrad Society’s 2009 Annual International Conference, its 35th, was held on 2-4 July at two venues in London. The third Philip J. Conrad Memorial Lecture was delivered by Andrea White.

The sessions of 2 July were held at the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) at 238-246 King Street in Hammersmith. The sessions of 3 and 4 July were held at the University Womens' Club at 2 Audley Square, Mayfair.

The Annual International Conference 2008

The Joseph Conrad Society’s 2008 Annual International Conference, its 34th, was held at Bishop Grosseteste University College, Lincoln, 2-5 July.

In addition to a full schedule of papers, activities included a tour of Lincoln Cathedral and the Tennyson Research Centre and a plenary lecture by C. T. Watts on Under Western Eyes.

The Annual International Conference 2007

The Joseph Conrad Society’s 2007 Annual International Conference, its 33rd, was held at The Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) in Hammersmith and at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich on 5-7 July.

Special sessions on Conrad's letters and on the writing of an opera based on "Heart of Darkness" were held. The Philip J. Conrad Memorial lecture was delivered by J. H. Stape, who spoke on Conrad biography.

The Annual International Conference 2006

The Joseph Conrad Society’s 2006 Annual International Conference, its 32nd, was held at The Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) at 238-246 King Street in Hammersmith, London, on 6-8 July.

There were two special sessions on The Secret Agent in anticipation of the centenary of the novel's publication in 2007, and papers on several topics, biographical and critical.

The Annual International Conference 2005

The Society's 31st Annual International Conference was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, co-sponsored by the Department of English of the Universiteit van Amsterdam and co-hosted by the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum (Netherlands Maritime Museum), with additional support provided by the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The main organizer of the event was Dr Gene M. Moore.

The inaugural Philip J. Conrad Memorial Lecture was delivered by Jacques Berthoud, who spoke on Nostromo.
